B-Team Ball Busting
Yes, that title has a couple of meanings.
Last night’s game didn’t really bring high expectations in Yankees Universe. Having the spring-training status squad on the field was merely a way to give those [hopefully sobering] vets a break after the previous night’s champagne showers and likely partying. Luckily for us, it worked out pretty damn well.

Yes, that is indeed last night’s lineup and box score. Sure, they played the Royals, one of the worst teams in the majors, but they still knocked them for 8 runs: 4 courtesy of a Granny by Robbie, 2 courtesy of Catwoman, and 2 more with thanks to Hinkse and Shelley. Frankie went 2-4 in the effort as well. All in all, it was not a disappointing day for us fans.
ña] had himself a couple of RBIs last night. One of those RBI came via his first Major League homer. He rounded the bases in a euphoric state, only to come back to the dugout and have everybody… ignore him? Alex Rodriguez engaged everybody in giving Pe
ña the silent treatment when he came back to the dugout. That had to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Particularly JoPo’s face as he and his teammates mobbed Pe
ña after going a good 5 seconds without saying a word. The camaraderie of this team is astounding. They really enjoy each other and get along so well. They’re like carefree teenagers sometimes. It’s awesome. To me, this team is running a close second behind 1998 – not necessarily because of how good they are, but because of the kind of team they are as a whole.
The other story of the night was Chad Gaudin. He pitched particularly well for getting a spot start since AJ went out to Oklahoma to be with his dad, who had triple bypass surgery. He’s doing okay and AJ should be back to start the game tonight. But, back to Chadski. he went a strong 6-and-two-thirds and only gave up two earned. He got his first win as a starter in pinstripes. Like Joe Girardi said in his postgame press conference, Chad has given him and the rest of the management a lot to think about regarding a postseason roster spot. Personally, I think he’d do a good job no matter where they put him. Fourth starter, long man out of the ‘pen, whatever, I think he’ll prove to be a good addition to the postseason.
So it was obviously a good win, and quite the spectacle to be seen. We’ll have to see what the lineup looks like tonight. Some of the vets are supposed to be returning and apparently Robbie and Melky will be getting the night off. Will the womens take that into consideration and still give them a good time? Stay tuned to find out…!

Clippin’ the Angels’ Wings
If I walked around saying something along the lines of “The Yankees are gonna win this series against the Angels and take two out of three,” people probably would’ve looked at me like I had tulips growing out of my head. Fortunately, this statement was made true only a little while ago. The Yanks really did take 2 out of 3 from those g-damn Halos of Anaheim, or LA, or California, or wherever the hell they’re claiming as home these days. And I’m pretty sure it came as a huge shock to most of us fans out there, myself included.

Yesterday, Chad Gaudin was on the bump in Anaheim [or whatever]. Considering his rep, he did a pretty darn good job up until the 5th inning. He was hit up for two runs and left it up to Aceves. Unfortunately, he decided to give up another two runs and make the game more interesting, or gut-wrenching, I’m not sure which.
The middle-third of the lineup was the key to last night’s win. A-Rod went 1-4, that 1 being a 2-run blast, and ended the day with 3 RBI. Matsui belted his 28th of the season, and JoPo had a couple of RBI as well. All of this goodness amounted to a 6-5 Yankee win in Anaheim. That’s right, a WIN in ANAHEIM. It’s like the saying “a needle in a haystack.”
* Sidebar 1: Jeet got his 200th hit of the season yesterday. I tell ya, this kid is somethin’. He’s gonna be great one day…
Today was AJ’s turn to toss. As I’m sure many others were, I was pretty apprehensive about this. The past few starts AJ had were not too fantastic. I think it was a good choice he decided to actually show up today. He only went 5-and-two-thirds, but he K’d 11 and only walked 3… which is pretty damn good for him. I’m hoping this is a sign that’s he’s coming around and is getting ready for the home stretch.
Having AJ pitch well was also key because Scott Kazmir was on the opposing side. Lucky for us, he was shaky in the fourth and he coughed up three runs. We have the Czech Brothers RobbieCanoDon’tchaKnow and MelkManLikesDeWemens to thank for that. =) And so, like sands through the hourglass we ended up with another win in Anaheim. Today must be Opposite-of-the-Oxymoron Day.
* Sidebar 2: JoPo and NickySwish were out with minor injuries
today. I really, really hope they’re fine. I don’t think they’re a
cause for worry. JHJ left the game with some issue or other, and
apparently he’ll be having a date with an MRI machine tomorrow. Hope
that’s nothing serious either. I’d hate to lose him on the bench,
especially now.
With these wins, the Magic Number is now down to 5iVE. How apropos that the Yankee Clipper/Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio happens to share that number and, oh, look, the title of this entry is about “clipping” the Angels’ wings… What a freakin’ coinkydink!
Ah, well, I guess I can use tomorrow to relax after a long first half of the week. Now that I’ve typed that, it sounds all the more appealing. I see a nap in my future. ♥ Sweet life!
Until next time, Yankee fans…
Bye bye bye (bye bye!)
Off Days Are Not As Fun As They Sound
So, since my excursion to the Ballpark in the Bronx, our Yanks have beaten the always-annoying Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Whew! That’s a mouthful), lost to the Blue Jays and came to blows with them, and beaten the Blue Jays in walk-off fashion. That’s certainly a lot of activity to catch up on.
Monday: Joba Chamberlain, your favorite and mine [rolls eyes], took the hill against Jered Weaver, aka the Better Brother. And wouldn’t ya know it, Joba went 4 and only gave up a run. Weaver went 7-and-a-third and allowed 5. The oddities of baseball are astounding.
Tuesday: Oh, Ser-Ser-Sergio, how you suck so! I think someone took over and used him as a human suit when he pitched so well a couple of starts ago. He, for all intents and purposes, fails. The only thing worth watching during this game was that epic fight. It was pretty intense. If there’s one thing you must learn from watching that fight, it is this: DO NOT MESS WITH THE 13-LB. EDWAR RAMIREZ. HE WILL CUT YOU. K, thanks. JoPo is a beast, Tex is an animal, and Shelley Duncan… well, we all know he’s psycho. =)
Wednesday: For what was mostly a boring, yawn-worthy game, a good result ensued. For starters, Chad Gaudin pitched relatively well, going 5-and-two-thirds, having only given up two runs in the 3rd, but when he was taken out, a man was on, so he was charged with that run as well when it came in. Hit-deki had himself a three RBI game – always a plus. But the real story happened in the bottom of the ninth. BG (Big Gunz, not Brett Gardner) hit a single, and stole second base. Jeter got him to third on a FC. Then, Frankie Cervelli, Jose Molina’s late-inning replacement, placed a single perfectly between third base and shortstop to drive Gardner home. The kid was so elated that he ran halfway into right-center field in celebration. He is friggin’ adorable and I just wanna pinch him. He definitely deserved the pie after everything he’s done for this club in the past. Love you, Frankie! You’re pretty much awesome! =)
Now, tonight is an off night, which is sad. Our boys make their way to the west coast yet again (wtf? again?) to take on the Mariners and those ridiculous Halos. I’m sick of them, to be honest. Thankfully we still have a considerable lead on them for HFA… and still a considerable lead over the Sox in the East. I just hope the rest of September is good to this team, ’cause now is certainly not the time for them to cool off, no sirree Bob. Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait ’til tomorrow to find out, right? *Sigh* I hate waiting. Whatever shall I do? I guess I’ll practice my patience. I just love doing that. [rolls eyes with great emphasis] ‘Til we meet again!
Peace out blog scouts!
Gaudin Is the Man & Swish Is Delish ;)
Naturally, we in Yankees Universe are no strangers to the walk-off win. Whenever a game is tied going into the bottom of the 9th or later, it’s only a matter of whose turn it is to get the infamous and always entertaining pie in the fach. Today, ladies and germs, it was my boy NickySwish!♥ Of course, as this was going on both myself and my Twitter/blog friend Jess aka ‘Furballz’ over at The Fuzz were flipping a sh_t because, well, let’s just say we wouldn’t be opposed to Swish playing inseminator.
[insert laughter at painfully obvious joke here]
Aside from being the hero and becoming the victim of yet another cream pie, NickySwish had himself another homer in the second. That’s the third time this season he’s homered from both sides of the plate in a game. And it’s about damn time he hit some of those things at home. Cue the sighs of relief and rounds of applause.
A-Rod had an RBI single in the 6th to make it 2-0, but Tampa came back in the 7th and 8th to tie it. And, well, you know the rest.
And Derek… well… he’s gone cold. Stick that dude on a hot plate and warm his a$s up! We need him to hit, aside from this whole breaking-of-records deal. Now is definitely not the time to slow it down, Derek!!!
The other big story of today’s battle was the pitching. Gaudin was nearly untouchable through 6, only allowing one run. Who woulda thunk it?! I was under the impression he’d need a crapload of runs to get the job done. Figures he’d turn me into a liar, but hey, I’m sure other people would’ve agreed with me.
More pitching notes:
1. Phil Hughes gave up a run via the homer. No, I’m not kidding. Hercules was half human too, ya know. Oh well, ish happens. I’m sure that was a fluke.
2. David Robertson has a Dr. Andrews-caliber boo-boo. If that’s serious, I might just cry.
3. David Price actually pitched really well for Tampa. He kept the Rays in the game the entire time he was in it, only allowing two runs. Unfortunately for him, that wasn’t enough. I’m looking forward to seeing big things from that guy in the future.
So, the brooms are out (just in case) for tomorrow night’s game. We’ll just have to wait and see how Joba fairs… [bites nails in suspense] TPPT™, yo! ‘Til next time!
Deuces!
Same Old Story…
I have one sentence for you, Yankee fans… We are spoiled!
Not that I’m complaining, but seriously now. It seems like we’re winning enough for everybody these days. I hate to throw the phrase “the higher they fly, the harder they fall” out there, but a loss will come at some point – we need to be prepared.
Okay, that little PSA aside, our guys had themselves a damn good game. So good, in fact, that the Orioles nearly [if not completely - someone hit me with that info.] milked their bullpen dry. Eight pitchers were needed on the side of the Orioles, only to manage a 10-2 loss. That offense is some kinda wonderful, huh?

The Hinsk-man connected for another homer, his second of the series. Good for him. Jeet, Mr. Roboto, MelkMan and even Panda had themselves an RBI apiece. Don’tcha love when you’ve got a bunch of contributors up and down the lineup? A baseball fan’s dream offense, I think.
CC (or Boss Dawg as I like to refer to him) Sabathia had himself a good game as well. He went seven strong and only gave up one run while fanning nine. He is our ace at this point, no doubt about it. He’s definitely one of the reasons we are beyond spoiled. He’s got the Midas touch of pitchers – whenever he steps onto the mound, a win is imminent. We should only be so lucky to keep that confidence with us the rest of the season, Yankee fans. We had best not take any of it for granted! Don’t worry though, TPPT™ will still be around to pick us up if anything should get us down.
This win gives our guys 6 in a row with an 85-48 record, still the best in baseball. What is there to complain about? Sure, some screws need to be tightened here and there, but that’s perfectly normal. I can hardly think of a time where every little thing involved in being a baseball team went perfectly all at once. We need not worry about every little thing that goes wrong. We don’t need those premature wrinkles about the mouth and eyes, no no no. [wags index finger]
And now, on to Toronto to take on the Toilets Blue Jays. They sure have been pretty terrible lately. They choked against the Red Sox and they most recently gagged against Texas. I think the three guys we’ve got headed to the mound – Gaudin (God willing), Joba (God willing again), and Andy – will get the job done. We can rest easy, Yankee fans. Yankees Universe is tranquil for yet another day. =)
Peace out blog scouts!
Ser-Ser-Sergio
**Advanced note: I’d like to thank Anchorman for being a friggin’ hilarious movie and contributing to this caption<33 >>
Dayum. What a game, huh?
And the offense? Well that was certainly a sight too. I certainly wasn’t expecting a shutout from Contreras, but I liked how things turned out. Everybody except Hinske [who pinch hit for Matsui] scored a run. A-Rod had two, including his 23rd homer of the season. Jeter’s still closing in on Gehrig – he had 3 hits today. Excuse me while I put on my shocked face. Last night’s hero had 3 hits and an awesome play in the field – and NO runners left in scoring position! =O JHJ was the difference-maker, however – his double gave the Yankees all the runs they really needed. The whole original offensive lineup contributed today. That’s something any baseball fan in general likes to see.
I don’t know what else could be said. It was nearly perfect. A 10-0 Yankees win. One-hit shutout. I’m actually having a hard time thinking of something to say matter-of-factly to put this win in perspective. The Power of Positive Thinking™ has avenged itself today, once again! =D
Side note: I have tickets for September 13 in my possession. Fifteen days and counting. I AM SO EXCITED.
As for tomorrow, I’m feeling a sweep in the air. Brooms out, everybody!
Peace out blog scouts!
Two Outta Three Ain’t Bad
Whew.
I’m sure this was the resounding response after last night’s win in Oakland. Chad Guadin made the start and actually came through scoreless. Tex was the hero, being the reason for all three Yankee runs – including his 31st homer of the season.

Imagine if we didn’t have him around to be our knight in shining armor. Where would we be? Interesting tidbit though unnecessary to think about, thankfully. =)
The Yankees will be spending this off day in or around Boston, apparently. “Around” translating into Hartford and… the Creed concert? Pete Abraham’s blog relayed this information. Johnny Damon organized a trip for himself and some teammates and hitting coach Kevin Long to attend. Apparently J-Dames is tight with Scott Stapp & Co. Why, Johnny? Why? Creed is a ’90s guilty pleasure at best… I’m almost ashamed. Too bad I have some of their songs on my iPod. [buries head in the sand] I’ll spare you the hypocrisy, Johnny.
Hopefully some of the other Yankees are taking the initiative to prepare for this series at Fenway. I just want them to be ready for this. I don’t want any sloppiness like they experienced on the west coast. My wishes are probably moot because, well, they’re playing Boston… at Fenway. Yes, I know even if they get swept (Heaven forbid) they’ll still be in first place, but I won’t tolerate it. Not even a little bit.
But, as always, I’m staying positive and optimistic about this series. No negativity. The Yankees will be fine. They will be themselves and will take at least a game or two. Preferably two. The power of positive thinking… Like Jane’s tarot reader said, we need to create a resonant field of support and succes for our boys. And I’m going to do just that. THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING, PEOPLE!!! Make no mistake, it can work wonders!
Peace out blog scouts!
Hop, Skip, and a Win in Oakland
Obviously awkward all around, but hilarious nonetheless. It’s a little disturbing how jockey-like this picture makes Melky look. Just call Kurt Suzuki “Mine That Bird” from now on.
This was just one of the many slapstick-like plays that occurred in this game. Scott Hairston of the A’s had a few “miscues” out in left field [to be nice]. Overall, the A’s had four errors [one of which should have been a hit by NickySwish - scorekeeper fail]. Melky got hit by a pitch, (which turned into what you see at left). CC threw behind Suzuki after Mazzaro hit A-Rod with a pitch the half-inning prior. A-Rod giggled. Next pitch was a towering solo shot. That sequence had “Karma” written all over it. But, to no avail for the A’s. They lost, 7-2.
Deej had yet another three-hit game. He never ceases to amaze me. Now he only needs 28 more to pass Gehrig. Absolutely incredible.
JoPo had a 2-RBI double to somewhat redeem his unproductive ways of late. One RBI apiece for Deej, J-Dames, A-Rod, & Mr. Roboto [fresh off his drained knee]. Let’s just forget the three DPs and the 4 runners left in scoring position with 2 outs…
Boss Dawg Sabathia pitched pretty darn well. Despite the two solo shots he gave up, he went 8 strong with 7 K’s and only one walk. His days of pitching crappily at Oakland Coliseum are ovaaah! [fist pump]
Tonight, Chad “The Bad?” Gaudin takes the hill against Brett Anderson. Anderson’s two starts against the Yanks have not gone overly well for him, so hopefully they use this to their advantage.
All I can say is that I’m hoping for the best. I want the Yankees to get on that plane, whether it be tonight or tomorrow, with a W going into Boston. Anything that keeps their confidence up, ANYTHING. So no focusing on negatives tonight, no sirree Bob. Just the positives… the power of positive thinking, people! LET’S DO THIS!

Sweepless, but Not Hopeless

° and accomplishing the same, diving for balls left and right. I had such respect for him and how he played the game. That respect has stayed in place for the past 13 seasons. He’s an amazing ballplayer to say the absolute least, and he is truly, truly a class act.
Jeet only has 34 hits to pass Lou Gehrig for hits all-time as a Yankee. Now that will be something to watch for. Bryan Hoch covered the game, and wrote this in his wrap-up [via yankees.com]:
“It was kind of hard to believe,” Jeter said. “I just try to be
consistent year in and year out. I think if you’re consistent, then
good things happen.“I don’t ever sit around and look back on anything that we’ve done,”
Jeter said. “It’s just more of what you can do to try and improve.
That’s what you try to do, year in and year out.“I think being consistent is something that gets overlooked at times,
but I think every player strives to be consistent. That’s all you can
do.”
Consistent, he certainly is (as well as ridiculously modest).
Other good things during yesterday afternoon’s game:
1. Nick Swisher belted his 20th homer of the year. It’s mind-boggling to see his average and still call him successful. But as many people have said, he is having a solid season. He had 2 RBI out of the three the Yankees scored.
Yeah, that’s about it… =l Womp womp. I’m not even gonna get into Joba Chamberlain and the rest of our pitching squad. That was just annoying.
The Yankees go into Oakland tonight. I won’t be around for the game – I’ll be partying [legally, don't worry], so I’ll just have to rely on texts and Twitter to find out what’s up! (If you have a Twitter, click that link to follow me! =) )
O, captain, my captain! Rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up – for you the flag is flung – for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths – for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning.
- Walt Whitman, “Leaves of Grass”
TTFN, ta-ta for now!
10pm Is a Long Way Away…
And I need something to pass the time, so here I am!
Last night’s game was pretty one-sided, the Yankees having dominated the Seattle Mariners and beaten them to a pulp, 11-1. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good beatdown, but I wish they’d save some of their offensive prowess for the weekend when they need it more. Here’s lookin’ at you, Serg + Chad. [cough]
- Yes, I’m on with the music references today. Btw, RIP Les Paul. You will be missed.
Boss Dawg Sabathia was also some kinda wonderful. What else is there to say? He was dominant. 10 K’s through 8. Dom-in-ant. At the beginning of the season I was kind of on the fence when it came to trusting the guy – you know, with the NY media and all that jazz, but now there is no doubt in my mind that he can do the job and do it more than well.
Lastly in regards to last night’s game, the semi-cocked lineup? Psh, no biggie! No A-Rod, no JoPo, an “injured” Jeter… Not to worry. Like I said in my last post, this team does not let a doubt settle in your brain for a second. Even when things aren’t up to code, you still know somebody or a few bodies will come through and get it done. This is what really strikes me about this team. They just do not let you doubt them, and that’s tremendous. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of this series/road trip turns out. Only 5ish more hours until first pitch! Yah, triiick, yah!
Deuces!
